Insurance Tips

Get the maximum benefit from your insurance policy!

  • Stay within your insurance network of physicians for maximum benefit with the least amount of out-of-pocket expense.
  • Get a copy of your policy and find out exactly what your coverage includes. Your employer or insurance company can help you here.
  • Keep careful records of all your covered expenses, claims, denials and appeals throughout the claims process. Do not throw any correspondence away.
  • Take notes during your conversations with insurance representatives. Include their names and job titles. Keep these notes with your records. If you think the representative is wrong, ask to speak with a supervisor.
  • If your claim has been denied, talk with a billing representative. Keep any denials or correspondence in your file.
  • If you become unemployed, your former employer is required to extend health insurance coverage for a period of 18 months under the COBRA law. However, you will be responsible for the premium during that time. Other rules apply, so contact your employer's benefits department.
  • The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) protects the jobs of people who must take a leave of absence because of illness or to care for a family member. Check with the human resources office at your place of employment for more information.

If at any time you have questions about your bill or your insurance, please do not hesitate to ask us or your social worker.
